As The Telegraph reports, baby Sacha was born between midnight and 12:01 a.m. on Jan. 1 in the French town of Moulin, becoming the nation's first recorded baby of 2013.
Sacha's parents -- identified only as birth mother Maude and her partner Delphine -- say they hope to marry as soon as it becomes legally possible to do in their nation. Maude sought out artificial insemination in neighboring Belgium because same-sex couples are not able to do so in France.
Although a plan to legalize same-sex marriage and allow gay couples to adopt was a liberal cornerstone of French President Francois Hollande's election manifesto earlier this year, the legislative proposals have proven harder to enact after faith leaders and conservatives in the mostly Catholic country have mobilized against them, Reuters
